Removing Laundry Stains

When it comes to laundry, nothing can be more frustrating than trying to remove laundry stains from clothing or other items. As a busy laundromat and laundry service, we encounter a wide array of stains that need removal. While there are many products that are available for stain removal, we hear from many happy laundry customers that an inexpensive and easy to find option for stain removal is vinegar.

Vinegar comes in handy for lots of things.  It is great for cleaning, canning veggies, disinfecting, washing fruits, and soothing sunburns and the list could go on and on.  In fact, vinegar is an often over-looked for removing stains from your laundry.  Here is a list of common laundry stains that can be removed by using vinegar.

Common Laundry Stains

Rust stains.  To remove rust from clothing, wet the area with undiluted vinegar and then massage a small amount of salt into the stain.  Let the vinegar and salt mixture dry in the sun.  Then wash the garment as usual.

Ink.  Wet the stain with straight white vinegar.  Then make a paste of cornstarch and vinegar.  Apply the paste to the stain and allow it to dry completely before tossing the garment in the washing machine.

Ring around the collar.  Make a thick paste of baking soda and white vinegar.  Apply it to the discolored area and wait about 30 minutes before putting the shirt in the laundry.

Deodorant marks.  Simply pour some white vinegar onto the area and massage it into the stain before throwing the shirt in the wash.

Unset wine stains.  Blot the area with a cloth soaked in undiluted vinegar and immediately put it in the washing machine.  Add 1 or 2 cups of vinegar to the wash cycle.

Unset bloodstains.  Pour undiluted white vinegar on the bloodstain.  Let it sit for 10 minutes and then blot well.  Repeat this step until the bloodstain is gone. Then immediately wash the garment.

Most stains are easiest to remove before they set, but if you have passed that time window, it is possible to unset many stains by using vinegar.  Start by mixing equal parts of white vinegar and liquid detergent in warm water.  Rub the mixture onto the stain and blot with a clean cloth until dry.  Then throw it in the washing machine.

By adding vinegar to your laundry supplies, you may be able to salvage clothing you might have previously declared a loss.  This will ultimately result in prolonged life of your wardrobe and save you time and money.
